THE MODERN ATTIC
CHISWICK, LONDON
Extension, renovation and decoration of a West London duplex apartment for a private client.
The project involved the reconfiguration and refurbishment of a narrow Chiswick maisonette, including the conversion of its attic into a new bedroom and ensuite. The defining intervention came at the top of the stairs, where a conventional enclosed bedroom was replaced with floor-to-ceiling glass, allowing natural light to flood through the stairwell and into the new room. A subtle golden weave within the glass softens the transparency, while a long linear light running through the centre of the stairs introduces a crisp contemporary element.
The newly created upper floor was designed to maximise both light and storage, with extensive wardrobes and integrated storage throughout. Elsewhere, the lower floors were reconfigured to improve the flow of the home, including relocating the kitchen to the centre of the plan. A graphic black-and-white kitchen reflects the client’s background in photography, while a cooler palette and 30-degree chevron flooring visually broaden the narrower proportions of the property.
More intimate spaces provide contrast: a dark, enveloping home office, a mirrored shower room and a softer bedroom scheme with silver textured wallpaper applied to the ceiling. The new master bathroom incorporates a generous double vanity and freestanding bath, with considered storage integrated into the eaves.
The result is a contemporary transformation that uses light, transparency and strong graphic elements to open up a compact period property, balancing its modern interventions with softer, more layered interiors.
